Daypro
Daypro (a brand name for the drug oxaprozin) is an anti-inflammatory that is most often prescribed to patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and juvenile arthritis. Daypro does not treat these conditions themselves, but does help improve or alleviate some of their symptoms.
However, a great number of patients taking Daypro have shown an increased risk of heart problems (such as heart attacks) and blood vessel problems (such as strokes). It also puts elderly patients at a much greater risk of potentially-fatal bleeding and ulcers in the stomach. Of particular concern is that these can occur without any warning signs.
Since Daypro's FDA approval in 1992, patients nationwide have filed lawsuits against the makers of Daypro for an increased association with a condition called Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), which affects the skin and mucus membranes and is fatal for nearly 1 in 5 cases.
Patients most at risk for Daypro's adverse reactions are the elderly, but women and people with low body weights are also at risk. Daypro has not been approved as safe for children under six, even those suffering from juvenile arthritis.
